Coaching for Parents of Intellectually Gifted Teens
Helping you understand what may be driving your teen’s reactions and respond with greater clarity, steadiness, and confidence.
A Rewarding—and Often Complex—Parenting Challenge
"That can leave you unsure whether to push, protect, step in, step back, hold a firmer boundary, or simply listen longer."
This Is Not About Blaming You or Fixing Your Teen
Parent coaching gives you a supportive, practical and confidential place to slow difficult situations down and understand them more clearly. The work is not about judging your parenting or turning every concern into a problem with your teen.
We look at what has happened, what each person may have been reacting to, where the interaction shifted, and what might help next time.
The goal is not to remove every struggle. It is to help you support growth without adding unnecessary pressure, preserve connection without avoiding difficult conversations, and respond in ways that will serve your teen over time.
Your teen’s ability is real. So are the skills they are still developing.
What Parent Coaching Can Help You Do
The work is shaped around the situations you are actually facing at home. Coaching may help you:
Better understand avoidance, perfectionism, withdrawal, intensity, defensiveness, or sudden loss of motivation.
Communicate concern in ways that are less likely to be heard as criticism, disappointment, or added pressure.
Know when to guide, when to step back, when to hold firm, and when to listen longer.
Set expectations and boundaries without turning every disagreement into a contest of control.
Support achievement while helping your teen separate personal worth from performance, talent, or potential.
Interrupt recurring cycles of pressure, repair more effectively when a conversation does not go well.
How Meta-Skills Help
Knowing what to do as a parent and being able to use what you know in a difficult moment are not always the same.
“Strengthening these capacities is not about following a script or becoming a different kind of parent. It is about helping more of what you already know remain available when you need it most.”
Strengthening your ability to:
- Maintain steadiness when emotions rise.
- Listen accurately before reacting or moving too quickly to a solution.
- Separate what actually happened from assumptions, fears, and interpretations.
- Take your teen's perspective without surrendering your own judgment.
- Use parental authority clearly, consistently, and appropriately.
- Make disciplined decisions about expectations and independence.
Coaching Options
One-on-One Coaching for Parents
Private coaching for parents who want focused support understanding their intellectually gifted teen and responding to current challenges with greater clarity and confidence.
Cohort Coaching for Parents
Small-group coaching for parents who want practical guidance and the benefit of learning alongside others facing many of the same questions. Cohorts are intentionally small.
A Confidential Coaching Relationship
Parents need a place where they can be completely open.
A place to talk honestly about what is happening, what they are worried about, and what they may be struggling with themselves. You deserve a space where you can be fully honest and talk things through.
Parent coaching is confidential.
What you share with me is not shared with your teen or anyone else. If a joint conversation or coordinated step could be helpful, we discuss it first and agree on what, if anything, may be shared. The only exception is a rare, clear danger to your teen or someone else.
